Celebrating 40 Years!

For 40 years, the Austin Affiliate has been advocating and providing education for women and all members of the media. Through its fun events, informative programming and corporate and membership participation, AWM Austin has endured. This year our goal is to share the rich history of the organization and its influencers, while continuing to provide professional development and awarding a college scholarship.

AWM Austin has come a long way. In 1980 the Austin chapter of American Women in Radio & Television (AWRT) was founded. In 2010, the organization changed its name to the Austin Alliance for Women in Media (AWM Austin) to better represent our commitment to women in all forms of media. Throughout the years there have been a variety of events from luncheons to Battle of the Media Stars to 5K runs to parties, happy hours and so much more.

Join us in celebrating our past accomplishments and be a part of creating new ones for 40 more years!

In the early ‘80s, the Austin affiliate did a program called Soaring Spirits. Because there was no cable television at the time, hospitals were short on programming for children. Someone with the national chapter had discovered the lack of distraction for the children while paying a visit to an ill child in the hospital. That’s how the program came to be! The idea was to provide cartoons on tape to show on TVs in the hospital. Our local chapter hosted a 5K run to raise funds to purchase the equipment. We then provided the equipment and content to the hospitals. The organization continued this project until all the rooms at that time were equipped.

Dorothy has been with our organization more than 30 years, was president from 1993-1994, a recipient of the Trailblazer Award in 2000 and of The Mary Strickland Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. We asked Dorothy a few questions about what she remembered and enjoyed the most about her involvement with AWM.
